Reef-A-Palooza (RAP) is an annual event promoted by the Southern California Marine Aquarium Society (SCMAS). Now in its eighth year, RAP can best be described as an indoor marketplace where sellers, exhibitors, and hobbyists of all types can buy, sell, trade, showcase their products to the marine hobbyist community. The main purpose of Reef-A-Palooza is to provide an enjoyable, positive atmosphere that is conducive to education and trade of both product and knowledge. As such, participating exhibitors range from large manufacturers, to retailers, to small livestock sellers, and participating hobbyists range from the beginner to the elite, rare-species coral farmer. It is the perfect venue to showcase new products in the marine aquarium industry. We strive to rally a diverse range of participants into the two-day event so as to present the best value and interest to everyone involved. Considering our current bookings and the popularity of previous years (3400 attendees in 2010 and 3900 attendees in 2011), we expect 80+ exhibitors/exhibitors and well over 4,000 attendees this year!

Ret Talbot is an award-winning writer and photojournalist with nearly 20 years of experience covering stories from some of the more remote corners of the globe. From the icy summits of the Andes to the reefs of Papua New Guinea, his assignments have taken him off the beaten track and put his readers face-to-face with stories of adventure, new ideas and innovative approaches to commonplace issues.

Since 2007, Talbot has worked as a fulltime freelance writer and photographer, penning stories for magazines and working on book-length projects. His most recent work has focused on marine ecosystems and the myriad interactions between humans and those ecosystems. From the artisanal fisheries of Pacific Islanders to the heavily politicized commercial fisheries of Hawaii, Talbot has spent much of the last year interviewing fishermen, politicians, scientists, environmentalists, and other fisheries stakeholders about the concept of sustainability.

Talbot frequently reports on the marine aquarium trade, and his articles can be found in a variety of trade publications. His aquarium-related books include The Complete Idiot's Guide to Saltwater Aquariums (September 2009). He is a senior editor at CORAL Magazine, where he is currently working on a multi-year series of articles focused on sustainability and marine aquarium fisheries. Reporting from places as disparate as remote island nations across the Indo-Pacific and the massive import and wholesale facilities at Los Angeles International Airport, Talbot's series of articles in CORAL have established the marine aquarium fishery as a microcosm for the complexities of international trade, socio-economic development and environmental conservation.

This year there will be some changes. For starters, SCMAS committee members Greg Fryling and Steve Carroll will be handling reservations. SCMAS is having a new website designed to improve your future reservation experience. That change is still approximately a month away. So for now if you would like to reserve a space, please send an email to reefapalooza2011@gmail.com and we will accommodate your request.

With over 3,200 atttendees, Reef-a-Palooza became the largest marine aquarium event in the country. Reef-a-Palooza continues to expand our hobby through education, conservation, and propagation. We hope to keep you in our family of those committed to the future of captive reef keeping.

Reef-a-Palooza continues to be the best value for consumers and vendors. As always we will continue to have a large group of volunteers to assist you during set-up and tear-down as well as during the show itself. As a SCMAS supporter and previous Reef-a-Palooza attendee, we are opening booth space a tad early for you to reserve your space. In its 25th year, SCMAS continues to be a forward thinking organization. With many "firsts" (frag swaps, scratch and dent sales, workshops, Western Marine Conference 1995) SCMAS continues to remain a positive force for this wonderful and dynamic hobby.
